Più volte io mi recai su quel colle per visitarvi i ruderi che ancor rimangono, e seduto all' ombra di fronzute piante 1' intera città si presentava a miei sguardi, e meditava con diletto sulle numerose vicende alle quali soggiacque la mia patria nel volger di tanti secoli, e sulla memoria di tanti clamorosissimi avvenimenti. Il silenzio profondo che regnava su quella deserta pen- dice, ove gli antichi gentili sacrificavano un tempo al sommo Tonante, ed ove surse da poi un cristiano de- lubro c...he destava una sacra venerazione, mi commosse altamente, e nel mirare quelle mine determinai di conservarne almeno nelle carte la memoria, pria che il tempo e la mano dell'uomo ne avessero perfino a cancellare le traccie.
Seguitando impertanto quel pensamento parlerò da prima dei monumenti che esisteano in quel colle ai tempi romani, ragionerò in secondo luogo delle vicende storiche del medio evo che lo risguardano, tratterò da ultimo dell'antico tempio di S. Pietro e della sua storia.
