On two occasions the waves have played remarkable pranks with vessels, lifting one and depositing it unhurt on the top of the Chesil Bank, and carrying another clear over the ridge into the safe waters of Portland Harbour.
It is well known that Lyme lies in a region of land- slips in fact, the town itself has an appearance of tumbling into the sea. In addition to sea-erosion there is the operation of land-springs causing a general tendency to slide. The cliffs between Lyme and Charmouth are was...ting rapidly, it is said at the rate of three feet a year, and a lane that led between the two places has long since disappeared. Old inhabitants of the neighbourhood speak of a time when the Church Cliffs reached half a mile further seaward ; this may be an exaggeration, but the whole coast here and westward towards Seaton is pre- carious, and nothing can be done to secure it. An extraordinary landslip happened in 1839 at Dowlands, when an area of 40 acres slipped seaward ; but to visit this would take us into Devonshire.
