Hie I dyestuffs are among the oldest artificial organic dye- stuffs known. Most of them are distinguished ha the brillianc) and intensitj t their dyeings, foremost in this respect being the basic triphenylmethane dyestuffs, cially methyl violet, malachite green, brilliant green and fuchsine. In spite ol theii beautiful colour, however, the fastness ol thea dyestuffs, particularly towards light, i> only moderate, so that, notwithstanding then beauty SILK 8r and low price, they have been displace...d by faster dye- stuffs where this quality is a consideration. Conse- quently, their employment in silk dyeing is restricted to dyeings in which a high degree of fastness is not required, or for shades which, at present, can only be obtained in their full beauty by the use of basic dyestuffs, such as the rhodamines. Fuchsine rinds the largest application of any. It is rather difficult to dissolve, especially when in large crystals, mere suffusion with hot water being frequently insufficient to bring it into solution.
