Bernard Lens, whose work in general is marked by a certain hardness of effect, is represented by a few characteristic examples, notably the portrait oi Mary, Duchess of Montagu (r 14), the youngest of the Duke of Marlborough's four daughters, and the Lady TJnkno'Vpn (o 11), signed and d...ated 1720, which may possibly represent another daughter, Henrietta, Countess of Godolphin, after 1722 suo jure Duchess of Malborough (Plate LIX). Both of these are on ivory, a material of which Lens was the first to make extensive use. To the same artist belongs the so-called portrait of Mary Queen of Scots (c 17), after the miniature repaired by Lawrence Cross to the order of the Duke of Hamilton, and in the process beautified out of recognition.
