When we consider the variety of goods ready for sale in retail shops and the complexity of the organization needed to produce each of them, and realize at the same time that that organization has been brought into being and applied to the production of the goods without any expressed demand for them, it becomes matter for sur- prise, not that the productive organization is occasionally mis- directed, but that it hits its mark so often as it does.
