Newcomers who experienced formal group entry reported higher levels of participation than did those who experienced informal individual entry. However, the difference in mean scores between the two socialization processes was not significant. Because of the importance of participation as a theoretical and a practical variable these results suggest that the relationship between socialization strategy and participation should be the subject of further investigation.
