191 climb the slopes. As one ascends, the plants of the valleys gradually disappear, others of species peculiar to the higher and colder air of the mountains take their place ; the pine-trees, after a time, grow fewer, and at last cease, until, after farther ascent, the line of permanent snow is reached, at a height of about 9000 feet above the sea (Fig. 75). Beyond that line the climate has quite an Arctic character, with few traces of life, either vegetable or animal. Within the torrid zone t...he moun- tain contrasts are still more marked. The sultry plains of the Ganges, for example, show a luxuriant tropical vegetation ; on the middle slopes of the Himalaya, the climates and the vegetation resemble those characteristic of the temperate zone ; while the higher summits are like polar latitudes in their temperature and partly in their plants.
9. Every mountain-chain is traversed by a system of valleys. Those which run along the line of the chain and separate its ridges, or ranges, are called longitu- dinal ; those which run across the ridges and divide them into independent mountains are termed trans- verse.
