The thermo-pile, invented by Nobili, and improved by Melloni, consists essentially of a chain (Fig. 297) formed of alternate elements of bismuth and antimony. If the ends of the chain be connected by a wire, and the alternate joints slightly heated, a thermo-electric current will be produced, as will be explained hereafter.
