Dr. Baird is authority for the statement that a "Protestant family named Chamois is mentioned in a list of fugitives from the neighborhood of St. Maixent in the old province of Poitou, France, at the time of the revocation of the edict of Nantes." (I) Peter Shumway was settled in Topsfield, Massachusetts, as early as the year 1660, and it is believed that he was in this country at least ten years previous to that time, or about the middle of the seventeenth century.
