There is a foundation in nature for Aristotle's fourfold division of explanatory causes, though we may have to amend it somewhat to suit it to modern science.
Ifaterial Cause. — Here w^e inquire into the nature... of the substances, be they inanimate body, or living body or mind. It is the end pursued in chemistry, and in all the sciences dependent on it, and so far also in psychology. No doubt the inquiries into the matter, and the forces in matter, may be mixed up with each other ; but they may be distinguished, and it is often desirable to separate them.
We may or may not approve of calling the matter out of which a thing is formed a cause, but it certainly has a place, and this a deep one, in the economy of nature, and as such it should be acknowledged.
