Lovely as the poetry of Cymbeline is, and most lovely as Imogen is, this play is, to me, one of the least agreeable in the collection. Nowhere, not CYMBELTNE. 191 even in Leontes, is the odiousness of jealousy dis- played in such glaring colours as in Posthumus, who, in plain terms, acts a villain's part. A man who could lay wagers upon his wife's virtue, and wilfully expose her to the insults of such a ribald-scoundrel as lachimo, is not only unworthy of Imogen, but richly deserving of the worst possible consequences of his folly.
