He might be right or he might be wrong, but at least he was not speculative in his philosophy : he was a man of deep and strong sentiments and glowing sympathies, with an in- comparable gift of vivid dialectic ; a Gladstone raised to a higher power, because more intense, original, and organic in his convictions, endowed with a genius rather than a talent for expression, and carrying passion in his blood and senses, as well as in his brain.
