Hence, it becomes a necessity, if justice is to be done, that the prisoner have the services of a lawyer to present, in defence, all the favorable evidence. The United States... But the real basis of the provision is to protect the innocent from unjust convictions, and not merely to provide a form by which avowed criminals may be convicted.
It is true that guilty persons do take advantage, undue advantage sometimes, of this right of defense. It is true also that some lawyers so far forget their duties to the public as to invent unworthy means of delay and throw all manner of obstacles in the way of justice.
