We have now crossed three of the great rapids of the Danube, with their tremendous breakers and currents. The river leaps forth into a broad channel, and embraces an island where a Greek church has been erected, and above which rise bluff escarpments and walls of rock, con- taining cracks and rents like loopholes of a Cyclopean citadel.
