5, 6, 334 EXCURSIONS IN GREECE. Aspect of the buildings was far more splendid. Within the sacred precinct, entered through propylaea of the Doric order, there rose some buildings of considerable size, of whose arrangements we now know the most important details. There was the temple of Asclepius, nearly 80 feet long by about 40 feet in width, with Doric columns and painted cornice ; its pediments were decorated with statues, and figures were placed upon the summit and at the angles of the princ...ipal fagade ; it was built in the early part of the fourth century, and strangely enough had no opisthodomos or chamber to the rear of the cella. Near it stood a fine circular building, the Tholus, built in the fourth century by Polycleitus the younger, a splendid marble rotunda, surrounded by a Doric colonnade, and orna- mented on its inner circumference by sixteen Corinthian columns. This was one of the most beautiful buildings at Epidaurus, with its coffered ceilings painted in a thousand different colours, with its walls decorated with all kinds of marbles, and lions' heads and marble ornaments crowning its summit ; it was also one of the most remarkable, with its circular crypt, where three concentric passages no doubt formed a reservoir fed by the sacred spring.
