These objections were just as vociferously urged in their day as are the objections to the acquisition of the Philippines in our day. OBJECTIONS TO THE ACQUISITION OF LOUISIANA. First. Parts of the territory are so remote as to be inaccessi- ble to the influences of civilization, commerce, or religion. Eighth. The expense of governing it will pauperize the people of the East, and no compensations therefor.
