28 EXPERIMENTS WITH VACUUM TUBES One important use is open for vacuum tubes. It is that of exploring the magnetic field of dynamos, alternators.

or for any other class of practical work of this nature as well as for theoretical investigation. A very small coil and tube will suffice for such testing.

EXPEBIMENTS WITH VACUUM TUBES 29 It is desirable to point out, that whea there is a free N.
and S. pole, anywhere in the proximity of the tube there are banded line
...s of light on each side of the tube when the two currents are present, and a single band of light when only one current is present, and the position taken up will always be situated equatorially to the lines of force.
Consequently the position of the light in the tube is the test for lines of force.
The smallness of the bands, and their closeness, gives the strength of the field.
Considering for a moment one line of bands, in all cases this line will be straight when the field is symmetrical.
When unsymmetrical the line will be bent into various curves, generally spiral.
