Atrophic changes in the muscles are as a rule con- sequent on degeneration of some part of the cerebro- spinal axis, and especially of disease of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord, but there appear to be cases in which the disease is primarily and essentially dependent on some pathological change in the muscles themselves.
