As I dozed in the bracken listening to the drowsy hum of the bees, the ' chink-chink " of a stone-chat fell upon my ears. A pheasant startled by a passer-by flew over my head with a loud whirr. In the silence which followed a field-mouse crept out in search of food, and was promptly seized by a weasel, which had been on the look-out for a meal. The tramp of the labourers returning from work, pro- claimed that it was nearing sunset, so gathering up my possessions I returned home.

The full harvest moon rose over the dark, sleeping pines, as a stoat sprang from the midst of a bracken clump, into a mossy clearing. No one knew what had brought him out of his snug home, save himself. But there he stood, his tail twitching excitedly, and his eyes aglow. Suddenly he bounded into the brushwood, and appeared five minutes later, from the roots of a thick hedge surrounding a wheat field ; whereon the shocks of com stood ghostlike in the glare of the moon.
