A new dike can not easily be built, and, besides, there is great ex- pense, esp)ecially to us in Egypt, where we have no brush wood of any kind, and we either use stone or burnt bricks, and make brick clamps, and then fuse them so that the whole will easily sink with the flood, and we can build on it, and get something that will take the place of rock, so that when the river comes up here there will be a fixed point, and once you have that one fixed, you go to the next one, and our object is to fix the river so that the dikes shall not be eaten away and have to be remade.
