...th the holy shrine of St. Michael in the Via Calzajoli has a long history which takes us back to the early days of Florenze. Since the time of the Longobards the archangel had rivalled in popularity the patron saint of the town, St. John the Baptist ; at least four churches and two convents were consecrated to him. As far back as the 9 th century we find a small, old convent "in the garden", for the nuns of St. Michael, and after 11 76 a church which was demolished in the 13 th century. In 1284 the municipality had a "corn exchange" built after Arnolfo's plan, and placed it under the supervision of the Guild of Silk Manufacturers.
