It is therefore interesting to find that Rabelais quotes a line which is common to Grringore and Coquillart, and that he has a special affection for *' Master Frangois Villon" and 'Hhe noble Patelin '\ both of whom, as we have seen, figure in Epistemon's accoimt of the other world, in company with the Franc-archer of Baignolet, whose mono- logue was first added to Villon's works in 388 Digiti ized by Google RABELAIS'S ART Galliot Du Pr6's edition. Master Frangois is also the hero of two stories..., into one of which he is thrust in defiance of chronology; and his famous refrain, "But where are the snows of yester-year?** is quoted, with mention of him as "the Parisian poef . Patelin also is represented by nu- merous quotations. Rabelais's attachment to the older literature is also shown, as might be expected, by his familiarity with the romances of chivalry, the heroes of which find constant mention in his book. Towards his contempo- raries, Marot and Saint-Gelais, he exercised the privilege of friendship, borrowing from Saint- Gelais the enigma which was found on digging the foundations of the abbey of Thelema, and from Marot sundry lines and phrases.
