Besides, the more com- pletely he is subdued the more numerous are the friends that will spring to succor him. Pity is the surest provocation of loyalty, as envy is of rebellion. Vanity is concerned in both cases; in the latter di- rectly, in the former indirectly; for the next best tiling to being a king is to help to make or restore [64] TROOPS AFTER NASEBY one.
