In- stead of helping himself brutally, as the others had done, he gracefully covered his mouth with one of the ends of his scarf, and drank through that.... I had been drinking this water unfil- tered, making an aquarium of myself.
A few minutes later I was surprised to see the man approaching the rear deck, where I occupied a camp-stool, captured and retained after unheard-of struggles. It was plainly his intention to address me. I rose from my seat to receive the card which he held out politely.
