"Return to your quarters," was the Colonel's brief reprimand, not waiting for the morning report. As there was no report, there were no ratio...ns during the day, and a hungry set of fellows they were at night, and nearly as mad as they were hungry.
At the first dress-parade several ofiicers appeared without coats. The Colonel surveyed them from head to foot, contemptuously, and then said, — " This is a rf/vjj-parade ; ofiicers are expected to wear their clothes. Dismiss the men to quarters." That was all he said. The men laughed as they 126 FROM THE TAN-YARD TO THE WHITE HOUSE, marched back to their quarters, satisfied that the Gover- nor had now provided them with a commanding officer, with whom no one could trifle.
