GEMS OF THOUGHT 117 'Twas a pitiful tale my mother's woe Who had risen high to fall so low, For love of one who sought to see That she might yet be as low as he.
My mother, poor mother, sunk in despair When love and strength had vanished there, Driven through shame to the lowest round She gave up to die when I was found.
My life began through the care of one Who thought not of God, nor evil to shun, But greedily gained her spoils on earth By keeping such children as I from birth.
