To provide for the safe-keeping and disposition of lost, stolen, or unclaimed property of every kind, which may at any time be in the possession or under the control of the police of such city, or city and county.

29. To appoint a fire marshal. Such appointment shall be made on the nomination of the boa...rd of fire underwriters of such city, or city and county, if such board shall exist therein. If more than one such board shall exist therein, then upon the nomination of the board which shall have been longest organized. His salary shall' be fixed and paid by such board of fire underwriters. Such fire marshal shall, before entering upon the office, take and subscribe the oath of office, and execute a bond to the state of California in the sum of five thousand dollars, with two or more sure- ties, to be approved by a judge of the superior court, for the faithful discharge of his duties.
