It may not be amiss, however, to consider that the truth of Christianity necessarily implies not merely a nominal, but a real and uni- versal ascendancy, in its obligations over the race ; so that it should be regarded as a sole and supreme substitute for all the illeiritimate forms and manifestations of reliarion that have ever appeared. That Christianity is true, and that it is exclu- sively the true religion — the only system adapted to the nature and condition of man — are often regarded as distinct propo- sitions.
