Unfortunately, in 1832 the Black Hawk War, then being waged in Illinois against the Sacs and Foxes, greatly alarmed the frontier settlers, causing many to desert their homes and flee to the older settlements fir protection.

Numbers of the panic-stricken inhabitants fled from the city to escape the dread disease, and many who remained succumbed to its malignance.
123. The election of Daniel Dunklin to the head of the state government took place in 1832; and the census of the same year showed the population of the state to be 176,236. The next year the Mormons, who had settled in Jackson County, and whose presence there had become extremely distasteful to the citizens, were ordered to leave the county.
