And what the Clyde is doing now, we know that it had been doing during the unknown period of time which has elapsed since it began to flow. During that time the Clyde has brought down and depo- sited a very large part of the ground on which this city is built ; and we have the means of measuring the depth of the strata it has formed since our rude forefathers first began to navigate its waters.
