Thus, after high hopes of an early and decisive victory, the Germans were on French soil without 109 110 GERMANY IN DEFEAT having effected anything except the costly reduc- tion of a couple of fortresses and the occupation of ground which was now strewn with their slain and littered with their wrecked war material.
