During the 102d Congress, the Coalition worked for the enactment of President Bush's America 2000 proposal. Last year, we stood behind the enactment of Presi- dent Clinton's Goals 2000 Educate America Act. During the debate on these propos- als, our interest focused on two issues: First, the need to establish higher academic standards for all students, and, second, to provide states with financial assistance that would either accelerate the education reform already underway, or help jump- start new, comprehensive education improvements.
