A crooning sound broke from the room. The Faun started suddenly as he had stopped. With little noiseless leaps and furtive backward darts he came near the window and looked within. For long the Faun watched, but as she rose to place the child in the cradle, he started timidly back against the tree.

The honey in the flower-hearts became ambrosial, a food too fine for sun, too dread for men. Over the thousand petals came a trembling caused by no wind, a motion of wakened fibres, a quivering given to the still pro- cession of the scent.
