Digitized by Google — 147 — vorhin beobachteten Regel passen, daß Mesarites, der Anordnung des Malers folgend, zuerst jedesmal die Mosaiken am Gewölbebogen, dann diejenigen an der Wand beschreibt. Ein direkter Widerspruch zwischen den beiden Quellen liegt aber darin, daß Rhodios vorher Taufe und Erweckung des Jünglings, Mesarites dagegen Taufe und Jesus am See Genezareth sah. Da beide Beschreibungen hier lückenlos fort- schreiten, finde ich nur eine Erklärung. Beide haben recht, aber es ist in ...der Zeit von der Mitte des lo. bis zum Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts das Bild von der Erweckung des Jünglings entfernt und durch die Szene von Jesu Gang auf dem Meere ersetzt worden. Der Inhalt des Bildes läßt den Grund der Entfernung vermuten. Was Basileios I. an dem Mausoleum Justinians gewagt hatte, wiederholte vielleicht später ein anderer Kaiser in der Kirche selbst; er nahm das Bild der Erweckung des Jünglings fort und schmückte damit die Stätte seines Grabes, den Ort seiner eigenen erhofften Auferstehung; ein anderer Künstler stellte an den leeren Platz das Bild von Jesu Gang auf dem See Genezareth.
