His conversation had a never-failing charm for me, and nothing pleased me better than to hear him talk about himself. He told me, I remember, of his experiences in the Mexican War, and the following years when he was stationed on the Pacific Coast at Vancouver. Raw- lins was one of the greatest adjutant-generals in the army, and of Bowers, Grant was wont to say that he never lost a paper.
