Ch. Pharm. 3, 577. ) The formula C 20 NH 19 S 4 18, KO ( = C 8 NIFS 2 + KO, S 2 O + C 18 H"0 M ) given by Ludwig & Langc, is, according to Will & Korner (Ann. Pharm. 119, 376), more correctly C 20 NII 18 KS 4 20 and contains the elements of oil of mustard C 8 NH 5 S 2, glucose C 12 II 12 12 and bisulphate of potash S 2 KII0 8 . Ludwig & Lange also found sulphate of potash among the products of the reaction, but no sulphite. Ononin is resolved by boiling with dilute acids, into forrnonetin and g...lucose (Hlasiwetz) : C eo H 34 O 26 = c 48 H 20 O 12 + C 12 H 12 12 + 2IIO. Onospin is resolved under similar circumstances into ononetin and sugar (Hlasiwetz) : C 5S H 34 O 2-1 = C^H^O 12 + C 12 H 12 12 . Such is the view of the reaction given by Limpricht (Grundr. D. Org. Chem. Braun- schw. 1854, 680. ) For Hlasiwetz's formulae, see Ononin. The sugar formed from ononin and onospin by the action of dilute sulphuric acid, remains in solution after the second product of the decomposition has been removed by filtration, the sulphuric acid by carbonate of lead, and the excess of lead by sulphuretted hydrogen, and is obtained by evaporation as a very sweet fermentable syrup, in which granular crystals form after a few days.
