On the first charge (that of refusing to submit to medical examination), the Colonel, doctor, and Sergeant-Major from London came down to give evidence. Their story was laboriously reduced into writing by the officer. I asked two or three questions in cross-examination, and was told that they could not be allowed. The Summary of Evidence was then supposed to have been sent to the headquarters of the Southern Command to ascertain if a court-martial should be convened. I do not know what took place, in fact, but about a fortnight later the Adjutant informed me that it had been decided to drop the first charge and that evidence would be taken afresh with regard to the second.
