During the last three or four years of his life he had several severe and protracted illnesses, during which I vol- unteered my services, not to fill his place, but to occupy it, in the class-room. This, together with my position as pastor of the University Church, brought me into close relations and intercourse with him.
As to religious emotion, he was, for the most part, undemonstrative, except in his cheerful sub- mission to infirmity and suffering. Yet he some- times spoke of impending deat...h and of the life beyond death with a quiet assurance that indicated the firmness of his faith and trust. At one period of partial convalescence from an attack that threat- ened a fatal issue, he told me that for several days he had been incapable of continuous thought, but had been made happy by the tacit repetition of the hymns and passages of Scripture which he had learned in^childhood under his mother's direction. He said to me but a few days before his death that his earnest prayer had been that he might be spared to complete his work on his version of the New Testament.
