The early education of Alexander was intrusted to Aristotle, the profoundest and most comprehensive thinker of the ancient world, and was conducted in a manner worthy of him who undertook it. Alexander was made acquainted with the deepest problems of metaphysics, with the result that his natural dis- position was completely refined and liberated from the ordinary fetters of mere opinion and intellectual crudeness and vanity.
