He traced the winding course of the Garonne from the mountains to the plains ; he walked the banks of the canal of Languedoc, wandered through the streets of Toulouse, the first large town he had ever seen ; stood upon the shores of the Mediterranean, marvelled at the sight of ships and billows, an...d gazed astonished at the deep blue sky, reflected in the loveliest of moving mirrors. He saw wonders in the charms of nature, and miracles in the works of art, but he had no true enjoy* ment or heartfelt sympathy in aught of these ; for the cold discourse of strangers checked every warm emotion, and threw him upon the memory of darker days, as the strand which flings back an abandoned bark upon the chill bosom of the waves that wrecked it. He wrote constantly to his sisters, but all at second hand.
