Following the classic precedents, as well as the ex- ample of the great English historical triumvirate, Macaulay proceeded to treat it as a complete history in itself; and from the very necessities of the case, it resulted in neither a gen- eral history complete in itself nor in a monograph, but in a fragment, a superb historical torso.
