Unable to perform cavalry duty, he was attached to the staff of General McClemand during the advance on Corinth, but, in October following, at the head of 400 men of his regiment, was transferred to the command of General McPherson. Early in 1868 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel, and soon after to a oolcmelcy, taking part in the movement against Vicksburg.
