The philosophic manner of Thucydides may be best illus- trated by a brief outline of the general introduction to his narrative of the war formed by his first book, which was clearly written after the war was over, i. E. After 404 b. C.

The earher history of this Hellenic world is rapidly reviewed in the clear light of reason, which uncovers the falsity of legend and romantic oral tradition, a...nd a new standard is set for the treat- ment of ancient and recent history. Coming to the treat- ment of contemporary and current history a new art entirely he says : ''Of the events of the war I have not ven- tured to speak from any chance information, nor according to any notion of my own; I have described nothing but what I either saw myself, or learned from others of whom I made the most particular inquiry" (i, 22, 2). He catches oral tradition, therefore, in the making, and not, as Herodo- tus did, after a generation or two of romantic expansion or partisan distortion.
