The estancieros kept what order they could among their gaijchos and the Indian tribes : and the most important of them formed loose defensive leagues in each province, so ti^at the first result of independence was the formation of a not very intelligent party of country pro- prietors, who knew nothing of the mysteries of politics, and were not ill-content with the existing order of things.
