They seem to have inherited, in some degree, the excellent character of their renowned ancestors ; yet many facts in their "liistory show most fully that they were not distinguished for that superior intelligence and devoted piety wliich were conspicuous in their fathers, and even in their cotemporary settlers in some of the other towns of New England. There are but few indications of early efforts for the education of children ; and I can find no evi- dence of the formation of a church of any denomination, in Free- town or Tiverton, for more than half a century after they were in- corporated ; nor is there any certain evidence that the people were favored with a stated ministry, for any length of time, during that long period.
