Like others, long known and venerated, who have gone before him in the good work of endowing this university, our new benefactor is a Rhode Island mnn by birth nnd residence and lifelong occupations, who, by the employ- ment of his talents and skill and enterprise in those industri&l pursuits in which Ehode Island has a kind of hereditary distinction, has acquired for himself an hon- ored namo and conferred additional honor upon his native State.
