The king, finding his situation now desperate, determined to make onefinal attempt to retrieve his fallen fortunes. He formed his troopsin array, and marched out to give the advancing army battle. He puthimself at the head of a troop of Highlanders, and fought in personwith the courage and recklessness of despair. The officers knew fullwell that it was a question of victory or death; for if they did notconquer, they must die, either by wounds on the field of battle, orelse, if taken prisoners, by being hung as traitors, or beheaded inthe Tower.
