In the latter part of the year 1832, a number of the most enterprising members of Chestnut Street Church, seeing the need of a Methodist Church on the east side of the city, and led on by such men as Daniel Field, Hezekiah Anthony, Joseph Fuller, Levi Webster, Job Andrews, James Lewis, Abner, David, and Capt. A...biza Hall, the enterprise was commenced and vigorously prosecuted. A subscrip- tion was made to purchase a lot, and begin the erec- tion of a house of worship on the corner of South Main and Power Streets. The corner-stone of the new edifice was laid, with appropriate religious cere- monies, July 4, 1833. The house was dedicated Jan. 1, 1834, Rev. J. Horton preaching a very able sermon on the occasion, on the distinctive doctrines of Methodism.
