This was Grover Cleveland, then sheriff of Erie county. When his nomination was announced, men but a... hundred miles from Buffalo asked, "Who is he?" His career has been a most remarkable one — an example of " Ameri- can ways " which Europeans cannot understand. Like Lincoln, he is a man of the people; almost as silent as Grant, with a broad comprehension of national affairs, united with a strong personality which made him able to lead rather than follow his party.
