Bronson says of him: "As speaker of the National House of Representatives he excited the interest of the whole country by his position in a contest the most spirited that had occurred in Congress for more than a quarter of a century. His political opponents criticised his official acts while all acknowledged his skill and ability. " Reed attended city schools and fitted for college in the high school; was nearly seventeen years old when he entered Bowdoin College; and he graduated in i860, just before he attained his majority; he had to rely almost wholly on his own resources to pay the expenses of his education.
